A public school district in Danville, Ky., has turned its emphasis away from traditional testing in order to encourage creativity and let students learn by doing. NewsHour special correspondent for education John Merrow reports on "deep learning," and how it requires commitment from educators, students and parents.

  1. It's about time that testing to destruction is facing some erosion. Project based learning like building rockets and guitars does more to show students how to think and what the value is behind the facts and skills they learn because the facts and skills are necessary components to completion of the task, not performance on a test. Tasks are real-world, tests are constructs abstracted from the real world. We need to focus on task performance learning and real problem solving. I am impressed with Danville and schools that have the courage to approach learning this way.
